From a simple beginning…

The National Motor Museum evolved from The Montagu Motor Museum which was founded by Lord Montagu in 1952 as a tribute to British motoring achievement and particularly in memory of his father, one of the pioneers of monitoring in Great Britain and the first Parliamentary champion of the motorist’s cause. Within 10 years the collection numbered more than 100 vehicles. To cater for the ever increasing demand for information of motoring history, Lord Montagu created, in 1960, a Motoring Library for books, manuscripts and photographs.

The decision to found a charitable Trust was taken in 1968 in order to safeguard The Museum and the Library collections for the long-term benefit or the nation. The National Motor Museum Trust came into being on the 17th November, 1970. Lord Montagu made available to the Trust his Vehicle and Library Collection, at the time worth in excess or $500,000. A Trust fund was launched with a target of $750,000 to enable these objectives to be realized and generous support has been received from both industry and individuals.

Now, The National Motor Museum is one of the best and most comprehensive Motor Museums in the world. The great new Museum building covers an acre of ground and gives nearly 70,000 sq. ft. of exhibition space. The exhibits tell the story of motoring from 1895 to the present day with many special displays and more than 200 historic vehicles.

The Museum is divided into seven main sections – firstly, the Alcan Hall of Fame, which displays some of our most historic cars, together with a special back projected visual presentation of some of the most famous pioneers and racing drivers. The divided into Veteran (up tp 1919), Vintage (1919 to 1930) and Post Vintage, Record and Commercial Vehicles.

Finally, there is the Graham Walker Gallery which contains the Motor Cycle Section. Accessories and components such a vital part of the motor industry – are displays showing the history and development of different components. Faithful to its policy of being a live Museum which working order, visitors can see the vehicles through a special window in the Motor Cycle Section.

The burning question that probably confounds the uninitiated amongst us is the difference between essential and scented oils. Simply put, essential oils are oils that have been extracted from natural sources such as plants and fruits.

Scented oils on the other hand are usually (but not always) their scent. This is probably the biggest difference between essential and scented oils. A point to note is that research has indicated that scented oils, be they “low-grade” essential oils or synthetic scented oils may contribute to certain allergies and asthma.

How Do You Tell Essential Oils From Scented Oils?
Essential oils are volatile substances extracted from plants. They are generally non-oily substances so it should not leave a greasy feel on your fingers.

Needless to say, essential oils are more costly than scented oils. Knowing how most of us are searching for that elusive perfect bargain, very cheap, especially when touted as “essential oils”. Chances are, this stuff could be very diluted or “low grade” essential oils that may not be suitable for proper aromatherapy use. The only effect such oils will have, is to lace the house with aroma.
The most obvious method (although not a very reliable one) of differentiating essential oils from scented oils is to compare the pricing.

Smells So Good! Let your mind and body embark on a scent-sensational experience

Aromatherapy is once again gaining popularity in our fast-paced and hectec lives. Not exactly a new fad therapy, some ancient cultures, such as the Egyptians and Romans, treated varying ailments using comparable forms of aromatherapy before the advent of modern medicine when people relied on herbs to treat medical problems.

Today, aromatherapy is seen as a new-age formula to assist us in creating a more relaxed environment whether it is administered using an oil burner or through massage. Relax after a long day’s work in the bath or your favorite chair surrounded by the aromatic waft of soothing lavender or relaxing camomile. Soak the tension out of your muscles simply by adding a few drops of essential oil in the tub, or gently douse the bedroom with your favorite scent.
Hardly expensive, or cumbersome to prepare, aromatherapy accessories and know-how can be picked up quickly and conveniently all around us.

A Helpful Jolt For Mind, Body And Spirit
The effects of aromatherapy will vary depending on the oil used; some ouls are believed to relieve sinuses, relieve stress or relieve pain in the joints. How this works, no one knows for sure but aroma therapists believe that the practice of aromatherapy can affect more than just your sense of smell
Some of the effects are based on the chemistry of the essential ouls and how they react with our body (through massage). Other effects are more of the spiritual nature, where people believe that spiritual power is released when the oils are blended together to assist mind, body and spirit, Whether this is true is a matter of personal opinion. Although, we live in a world steeped in technological advances, the power of aroma may not be fully understood even by modern science.
In theory, aromas may have the potential to heal, as we are aware that our emotions can alter things like heart rate, pulse and blood pressure, so it is safe to say that aromas lift our moods and may rejuvenate the body.

The more common method of administering aromatherapy is by using an oil burner. Using the burner is rather straight forward. Just fill the dish of the oil burner with some water and add a few drops of essential oil into the dish before lighting the candle. Other than the perceived medicinal benefits of aromatherapy, people use aromatherapy to mask odors or to just freshen up the interior of the home with a pleasant scent. Electric burners are no different from the ones that use candles. However, one has to exercise caution when using burners of any kind.

Q: I have an itchy, bumpy rash in and around my belly button. It’s also quite smelly and the spots are now weeping. How can i get rid of this irritation?

A: The sounds like an infection in your belly button. One possibility is that you’re allergic to nickel the metal which most buttons and snaps on jeans and pants are made of. This constant rubbing against your navel could trigger an infection. If this is the case, try wearing cotton underwear up to your belly button, so skin contact with the metal is not possible. The spots are weeping because you probably scratched (perhaps in yous sleep) and this has worsened the infection causing it to spread around the belly button as well. To get rid of the rash, you’ll need a prescription strength cortisone cream. Make sure you keep the area clean and dry.

Q: The whites of my eyes have become a little dull with a tinge of yellow lately. My friend told me that it many be a liver problem, and I do get this intermittent pain in the right side of my stomach. What’s wrong with me?

A: If the whites of your eyes have turned yellow, it is possible that you may have a mild strain of jaundice. The only way to determine the cause would be to see a doctor to get a blood test. Jaundice id a symptom of liver problems, though it is treatable once identified. Do see a doctor as soon as possible.

So the FZ-1 Super-Standard Packs A Real Punch. If you’re Yamaha, why not make it a 1-2 combo, with the knockout blow coming by way of the FJR 1300 sport-tourer, so far a Euro-only device? “We’ve had tremendous response to the FJR 1300,” admitted a Yamaha U.S. spokesman. “We would love to bring the bike here, but it has to have legs-it needs to stay in the line-up year after year. If it doesn’t, it will disappoint our customers. Also, the sport-touring category is very price-sensitive. The price has to be right.”

Jim Yeardly, a staffer for England’s Motor Cycle News, recently rode the FJR in Spain. A sportbike nut to the core, he came away impressed. “The large, pullback handlebars are perfectly postioned for leisurely riding,” Yeardly reported. “The dash, wich offers a segmented LCD gas gauge, a clock, two tripmeters and a range of other gizmos alongside the usual speedo and rev-counter arrangement, is reminiscent of the FJR’s discontinued older brother, the user friendly FJI200. That makes me feel very much at home, as I have very fond memories of that bike.”

Like the old FJ, the shaft-drive FJR gets its grunt from a big-bore inline-four, albeit a modern one that’s loaded with such niceties as liquid-cooling, fuel-injection and dual balance shafts. Yamaha claims 145 horsepower and 92 foot-pounds of torque. Noted yeardly, “Picking up the pace on wide, deserted roads, I glance down at the fast side of 130 mph. The five-speed gearbox has been in top for almost 50 miles, and I’ve hardly changed gears since I pulled away from the first junction.

There’s more here than motor, though, as indicated by a flock of features, from integrated hard; unengaged to twin catalyc concerted to an electrically adjustable windscreen. “For the last few miles, I’ve been playing with the FJR’s windscreen,” Yeardly wrote. “A two-way switch on the left handlebar cluster lets you raise or lower the screen to suit your height and to protect aginst varying weather conditions. It works like a treat.”

Ditto the rear-view mirrors: “Once adjusted to your liking the morrow are superb. The stalks are just long enough to avoid “elbows-only” syndrome.” To keep weight to a minimum, the FJR’s frame, swingarm and subframe are aluminum. To cut costs, brakes and suspension are Yamaha parts-bin items. Even so, Yeardly voiced no complaints. “As the seamless power delivery blasts me through the mountains, I notice another amazing feature-the YZF-R1-derived brakes. Even on bumpy corner entrances, there’s a smooth transition of power. The chassis and suspension soak up the battered and sun-baked Spanish roads. Even with the rear shock set on soft, the bike never gets itself tied up in knots.”

And the praise doesn’t end there. In his conclusion, Yeardly called the FJR1300 “as close to the perfect combination of sporty fun and long-distance comfort as anything I’ve ridden.” C’mon Yamaha, time’s a wastin!

Wooler also used belt drive, though this one has a foot-operated infinitely-variable gear. Chains and multi-speeds, however, featured on even the little 1925 “round tank” 2 1/4 h.p. B.S.A., long the transport of G.P.O. messenger boys.Unit construction of engine and gearbox was gaining hold, on Royal Enfild’s 1919 inline four cylinder prototype, retrieved for exhibition from a forgotten storeroom after 35 years. Sunbeam’s 1925 Light Solo had proper chain cases, and superior finish which justified a price of $88 for a touring 500.

Pioneer of advanced ideas was the 1921 transverse flat-twin A.B.X. Its cradle frame was sprung at front and rear, and brakes were internal expanding, but lack of finance killed it. By 1926 machines like the race bred 348 c.c o.h.v. A.J.S. American motor cycles grew more sophisticated: both the 1920 1-litre V twin Indian and the 1924 Henderson had electric lighting as standard (acetylene still sufficed in Britain). The Henderson, a monstrous 1.3-litre vertical-four, could be had with a reverse gear for sidecar work.

Uniformity was a long way away. Scott’s excellent 1923 3 1/2 h.p. with its open triangulated frame and water-cooled twin-cylinder two-stroke engine was possessed of an unmistakable exhaust note: it also had telescopic front forks, a kick starter, and foot instead of hand change. The 1921 Ner-A-Car, an American design also made in Britain, featured friction drive, a presser-steel frame, and really effective mud guarding which made it ideal for ladies and clerics.
In 1919-21, the scooter made a brief first appearance. Most were primitive, though of 1919’s crop the A.B.C. Skootamota was a substantial affair with chain drive, the 269 c.c. Autoglider had multi-leaf springing at both ends, and the Mobile Pup featured a modern-type welded chassis a folding steering column, and front-wheel drive.

Motor cycles were identifiable by their house colors: red on Indians, dark blue on Hendersons, black and gold on Sunbeams, and green and cream on B.S.A.s. The yellow Woolers were nicknamed “Flying Bananas” on account of their tank shape. Though saddle tanks – a first step to streamlining – had yet to come, by 1926 Triumph were marketing a straight-forward, modern chain drive 500 (the Model-P) at $43 all on.

Relax! They can’t eat you. And they did raise the man you’ve come to rather like, so they can’t be so bad. True to treat them as you would anyone else you’re meeting for the first time. If they start firing questions at you, don’t get too defensive they just want to get to know you.

If they start having a go at him about not getting in touch often enough and forgetting birthdays, resist the temptation to join in. You don’t want him to start seeing you in the same light as his nagging parents. Remember, all the subjects that are taboo with your parents – politics, sex, money – are probably equally taboo with his, so steer well clear.

If they thought – and don’t hesitate to tell you – his last girlfriend was the saintliest person since Mother Theresa, don’t get angry. Yes, they’re being rude, but you’ve got nothing to gain by telling them so. Just smile sweetly and nod your head in agreement. Remember, he’s not seeing her anymore.

However the meeting goes, don’t forget it’s him you’re going out with, not his parents. On no account say anything negative about his family. Even if he’s in total agreement, he doesn’t need to hear it from you.

Meeting Yours:
However much your family teases you, don’t regress into sulky adolescence. It’s so undignified – and deeply undignified – and deeply unsexy. If they do bring out the photo of you at 15, braces on teeth and wearing the rug your aunt knitted you, just laugh with them. It’ll be put away much faster that way.

Make sure you’ve briefed your family about him – that he doesn’t eat fish, he’s allergic to cats, is in PR and neither of you have any plans to get married right now. If you’re going to stay over, make sure you’ve had that bedroom conversation before you get your parents. Don’t be too disappointed if your boyfriend doesn’t hit it off with your mum and dad straightaway – some things take time.

>> 3 Glasses of milk you need to drink each day.
To maintain healthy bones, you need to down this much of the white stuff to get the recommended 1,000 milligrams (mg) of calcium a day. Don’t like the taste of milk? Consider some substitutions: A six-ounce cup of nonfat yogurt has 300mg of calcium two ounces of Swiss cheese has 530 mg; and a cup of spinach will give you 245 mg. Almonds, tofu and fortified orange juice are also great sources.

>> 24.9 Highest number for a healthy body mass index (BMI).
More revealing than the numbers on your bathroom scale is your BMI, which is a measure of your weight relative to your height. And, although not foolproof, it’s also an indicator of total body fat. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a healthy score. If your score is 25 to 29.9, you’re overweight; above 30 is considered obese. Any number greater than 25 puts you at risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer, and a host of other health woes. A number below 18.5 means you’re underweight, and you could face osteoporosis. To calculate your BMI, multiply your height (in inches) by your height (yes again, and in inches); then divide your weight (in pounds) by that number, then multiply that by 703.

>> 60 Minutes you should spend being moderately active each day.
Sure, it may seem impossible to squeeze that amount of exercise into your schedule-but we’re not talking about a vigorous workout here. Take your baby for a 20-minute stroll after breakfast, walk up and down the basement stairs while you’re doing laundry, or ride your bike to the post office. You’ll see how fast it adds up.

>> 12 Ounces of salmon you can safely eat each week.
Yes, we know it’s been found to contain PCB’s, mercury, and other pollutants, but if you’re careful to consume only the recommended amount, you’ll reap plenty of benefits without risking your health. Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids and may help to fight cancer, prevent heart disease, and ease depression. What’s more, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding omega-3s may help your baby’s brain development. When possible, eat wild salmons instead of farmed-it’s likely to be healthier and safer
