Essential vs Scented Oils

Continued From Aromatherapy For Mind, Body And Spirit

The burning question that probably confounds the uninitiated amongst us is the difference between essential and scented oils. Simply put, essential oils are oils that have been extracted from natural sources such as plants and fruits.

Scented oils on the other hand are usually (but not always) their scent. This is probably the biggest difference between essential and scented oils. A point to note is that research has indicated that scented oils, be they “low-grade” essential oils or synthetic scented oils may contribute to certain allergies and asthma.

How Do You Tell Essential Oils From Scented Oils?
Essential oils are volatile substances extracted from plants. They are generally non-oily substances so it should not leave a greasy feel on your fingers.

Needless to say, essential oils are more costly than scented oils. Knowing how most of us are searching for that elusive perfect bargain, very cheap, especially when touted as “essential oils”. Chances are, this stuff could be very diluted or “low grade” essential oils that may not be suitable for proper aromatherapy use. The only effect such oils will have, is to lace the house with aroma.
The most obvious method (although not a very reliable one) of differentiating essential oils from scented oils is to compare the pricing.
